Secure Spring: A Guide to Testing Your Lockset

As the weather warms up and flowers begin to bloom, it’s the perfect time to rejuvenate your home, but also its security. One crucial aspect often overlooked is the condition of your lockset. To check your lockset’s durability and keep your home secure this spring, follow our guide below:

Check the Alignment

The alignment of your lockset is extremely important. This ensures your door will lock properly, not get stuck, and prevents drafts (and heat) from entering your home. Make sure your deadbolt and strike plate are properly aligned. If they aren’t, it’s time to move it or replace your lockset.

Tip: When aligning your strike plate and deadbolt, rub lipstick onto the deadbolt, turn the knob to retract the latch and close the door. Then release the knob just enough for the latch to lightly touch the jamb. The color left over will show you exactly where you will reach alignment.

Look for Weak Spots

We open and close our doors countless times a day. This doesn’t even touch the impact your lockset incurs from opening the door while carrying heavy items, letting the lockset slam into the wall behind it, or even its inherent exposure to the outdoor elements. Over time, these factors can lead to your lockset loosening up and even result in rusted screws holding it in place. If you notice your lockset jiggling when you use it, see rusty screws on the strike plate, or find your deadbolt isn’t turning smoothly – it is time for a replacement.

Notice your Finish

Hardware finish has a big impact in keeping your lockset safe from excessive use and the outside elements. Unfortunately, the finish can wear down. If you notice excessive rust, a change in texture, and exorbitant change in color – your lockset has likely lost its protective coat. As you do spring clean-up, consider replacing your lockset with finish in mind. This will not only refresh your home with a stylish change, but will keep your home secure all year.

Your lockset is the first thing people see when they come to your door and it is the first line of defense – so as you brighten up your home this spring, take 10 minutes to check your lockset.
