Fall Preparation 101
As the leaves fall and crisp air settles in, now is the perfect time to inspect and prepare your home for the upcoming winter season. Taking steps to prep your home now ensures you’re not scrambling when the temperatures drop, allowing you to transition into the season with ease and peace of mind.
Here’s how you can get ahead and properly prep your home:
- Inspect your doors with intent: Make sure your weather stripping is intact and there are no gaps between the door frame and your door itself. Don’t forget to check for any damage to the frame. If you notice any cracks, rotting wood, or misalignment it may be time for a new one.
- Test your lockset: Your lockset is not impervious to cold weather and should be a priority when preparing for the season ahead. Not only will it be darker for longer, calling for heightened security, but the strength and durability of your lockset keep your home warm as well through mitigating any drafts with a tightly shut door. Make sure your lockset opens and closes properly, doesn’t stick, and does not show any signs or rust or discoloration. If these signs are apparent – it is time to invest in a new one.
- Consider change: If you live in a place prone to harsh winters, consider making a change to your front door. Whether it’s adding a storm door, trying outdoor insulation, or simply adding a door sweep – making sure your home is prepped for the cold now can save you time and money later.
Whether you live in a place with harsh winter weather or not, completing the steps above can help keep you more secure and save on energy costs for the rest of the year.
