Keeping Your Home Safe: Utilizing a Well-Rounded Approach
Keeping your home safe is of utmost importance as a homeowner. Whether you have a family or live on your own, having peace of mind at night is a necessity. Which is why safety needs to be a well-rounded approach. Yes, a certified lockset and proper key or code should be top of mind, but there are supplemental items that can be added to help ensure your safety.
Here is how you can prepare your home for safety beyond just a lockset:
- Invest in motion sensor lighting: This will help deter anyone from approaching your home. Make sure to place this in any spot that has high traffic or where there are key entry points like a front door, back door, side door, and/or garage.
- Go for the tech of it all: Use the latest technology to your advantage. Try doorbells with cameras or even combine your motion sensor lights with one that has a camera. That way, if someone unknown does approach your home – you will know and have the tools to report it.
- Avoid keeping house keys nearby: One of the first instincts is to look under the mat. Don’t just give away unfettered access to your home. If you need an extra key, invest in a lockbox that can be kept nearby.
- Make sure all windows are locked: Windows often go unnoticed as to whether they are locked or not, but they can be used as an entry point at any time. Make sure they are locked at all times unless opened while the home is occupied.
- Re-key your home as needed: Keep in mind that you can also re-key your home. Use this when a key has been lost, given out and not returned, if you recently moved, or a tenant has moved out. For more information, check out our previous blog.
Safety comes in all forms but is strongest using a variety of methods all at once. First and foremost, make sure your safety starts with a certified lockset, but don’t hesitate to add other elements to complement it.
